The BRL Custom 001, as its name implies, has been custom designed and has been master-built to the specifications of Bud Royce Lam, a young Toronto guitar virtuoso.

Buddy Lam, as he is popularly known, asked me to design his dream guitar which should incorporate violin features along with the best features of the most popular "Rock" guitars. When he saw the initial design, he was completely satisfied and gave me the go-ahead to build. This assignment has provided the opportunity for me to display my guitar-building skills, which I have developed through years of experience and dedication to the craft.

Technical Specifications

  • 25 1/2 inch scale length.

  • Mahogany centre core, beautifully hand-carved solid flamed maple top and AAA Grade solid quilted maple back. Body  has a solid centre block, with a sound chamber on either side, connected by two internal channels. Back plate for the  control cavity is laminated with quilted maple to match the guitar's back.

  • Bolt-on flamed maple neck with 2-way adjustable truss rod. Headstock has a 15 degree angle and is laminated with  quilted maple. Neck width 1 11/16" at nut 2 1/4" at 24th fret.

  • Pao ferro (South American) fretboard, bound with birdseye maple. Position side dots only.

  • 24 high quality 18% nickel-silver medium or jumbo frets.

  • 2 Seymour Duncan Humbucker pickups - SH-2 Jazz at neck and SH-4 JB at bridge.

  • Shadow SH 990-6 Turbo-Matic bridge, with Piezo pickups. Separate 'Stop' tailpiece.

  • Master volume control, master tone control and 6-position rotary switch to offer a multitude of single coil tonalities as  well as acoustic sounds.

  • Sperzel Trim-Lok machine heads, 3-a-side staggered.

  • Gold finished hardware.

  • Violin Sunburst at top and tiger's-eye finish at back.

  • Spray finished with Color-Tone High-Gloss, Professional Guitar Lacquer.

  • Optional colours are double-stained violin amber, transparent blackburst, transparent red.
